About the Corrosion Committee

The committee’s mission is to study and report on areas related to corrosion control through water treatment and to make recommendations to the Board of Directors on products, practices, legislation, and research concerning corrosion control.

Lead and Copper Rule Revisions/Improvement (LCRR/LCRI) Deadlines
To help raise awareness of all upcoming LCRI changes, the NEWWA Corrosion Control Committee has prepared an infographic summarizing compliance deadlines for these changes. It is imperative that all PWSs start to look at these requirements and their deadlines NOW and make plans to implement them. Please note that all PWSs must identify the material of all unknown service lines in their inventory by their mandatory service line replacement deadlines. Otherwise, they will be deemed lead service lines requiring removal by the same deadline as confirmed lead service lines. Click here to view the infographic here.

More information on the LCRI changes and implementation resources can be found on the EPA website.  Please consult with your State Regulatory Agency about additional requirements and timelines. We encourage community systems located in Massachusetts to take advantage of the free lead testing pilot program for schools and childcare facilities ahead of LCRI requirements. These systems may be eligible for a waiver after completing the program before November 1, 2027. For more information about the program, please visit MassDEP resources.

This video provides guidance for homeowners to properly collect first and fifth liter water samples, walking through each step to ensure accurate results and comply with the Lead and Copper Rule Revisions. It covers sampling preparation, technique, documentation, and timely return of the sample kit to protect public health.

This video was developed by the New England Water Works Association Corrosion Control Committee and premiered at the 2026 Spring Conference. Utilities are encouraged to share this video with customers and post on websites/social media for educational purposes.

Take the Corrosion Committee’s Survey – NEWWA’s Corrosion Committee has created a survey to help water systems in New England find analogous systems that may be used as a case study in their evaluation of optimum corrosion control for compliance with the LCRR.
