Course Title: Hands-On Introduction to Drinking Water Microbiology

Course Description
This one day, "hands-on" seminar will present an overview of drinking water microbiology and microbiological methods. Classroom instruction will be provided in the morning program, on such topics as bacteria, viruses and protozoa, testing techniques, and microorganism detection. Small group "hands-on" instruction will follow in four laboratory workstations: Basic Microscopy, Popular Methods of Sterilization, Aseptic Technique Practice and Simple Testing Methods for Microorganisms. Each workstation will contain the appropriate equipment and will be staffed by facilitators who will demonstrate procedures and supervise each group member.
Who Should Attend
The overall goal of the seminar is to develop a strong understanding of basic drinking water microbiology and fundamental methods of detection and identification of microorganisms. This seminar will be of particular interest to drinking water operators, focusing on what happens to the Bacti sample after it "leaves my hands". It will also provide a learning opportunity for water utility management professionals who wish to increase their awareness of drinking water microbiology as a key component of water quality monitoring.
